Presidential Elections
First Presidential Election
Electoral Map of 1860
Lincoln won over the Northern states because they didn't depend on slavery like the Southern states. Lincoln was against slavery, so when he became president he would try to abolish it. So the Southern states didn't vote for him because of that. When Lincoln did become president, the Southern states broke away. They created their own 'Constitution' and wanted to create their own nation where slavery would be okay.
Second Presidential Election
Electoral Map of 1864
In 1864 Lincoln ran again for president again. This time though he only ran against one other person instead of four, he ran against George McClellan. McClellan was a major general during the Civil War for the Union army. Lincoln only got ten more percent than McClellan for the popularity vote, but McClellan only got twenty-one of 233 electoral votes; Lincoln got 212, so he took office March 4, 1865.
Lincoln's second election took place during the civil war. Since the Confederacy broke away from the Union they were not allowed to vote in Lincoln's second election.
